As teachers continue to serve as positive role models for their young students, they have the distinct responsibility of also teaching those students the power of empathy. By getting into the practice of displaying empathy throughout one's daily interactions and activities in the classroom is so important. Many students come from different backgrounds and life experiences, it is important that teachers are in-tune with their students’ emotions and unique challenges. When teachers display empathy they are showing a meaningful connection while understanding and recognizing the feelings of others which in turn strengthens relationships. Teachers must find the balance of showing genuine compassion and understanding frustration, anger, and fear. It is important to address all students with respect and care while not lowering expectations in the classroom. Teachers are leaders, and showing empathy is an important leadership quality that can be displayed daily.
When a teacher is showing empathy they are understanding one’s challenges and are aware of their student’s current emotional state. It is important for teachers to be involved enough with their students to notice when something is wrong, ask important questions, and see how they can assist. Sometimes the most important act of empathy is just listening, and showing support when others are in need.
Modeling empathy and demonstrating a warm and caring social environment throughout your learning community only increases a positive classroom culture. Be aware of your student’s facial expressions, body language, and become an active listener to gauge a better understanding of your class’s social-emotional needs. Actively listening to your students is important. Students deserve an environment to be themselves and release some of those difficult emotions to navigate without being judged. Create a comforting environment while validating their feelings showing that you genuinely care.
Like many other activities in the classroom, students will model you and your behavior. When a student becomes dismissive or visually upset, it is important to validate their feelings, ask important questions, then guide them to better choices and redirect their behavior to more positive classroom expectations. Continue to build love, trust, and rapport among your students to create the ultimate learning environment for your students to thrive.
Incorporate social-emotional learning throughout the year. Students who best understand their own emotions can manage stress better and increase self-control. Social and emotional learning is beneficial at every grade level. These lessons are the building blocks for students to understand the importance of building relationships and how to successfully communicate with others.
