14 Acts of Kindness Ideas for your Classroom
Make Your School Awesome Staff
February 9, 2022
Schools throughout America teach kindness and empathy each day to their students. It is an important component of social and emotional learning and aligns with the present-day curriculum and climate in schools. As Scott Adams once said, “Remember there’s no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end”. February 17th, 2022 will mark “National Random Acts of Kindness Day.” Each year, thousands of school districts across the country and teachers create “kindness challenges” for students to participate in. Another great resource is thegreatkindnesschallenge.com which also provides resources and ideas in educating your students on why kindness matters.
February is the perfect month for your students to spread and practice love and kindness towards others! Here are our top 14 activities for students to contribute to a positive and kind social and learning environment. OUR TOP CLASSROOM PICKS
Thirsty Heroes
Have your students design water bottle labels with messages of gratitude for your local volunteers. Collect new water bottles and tape over the exterior with your unique designs. These bottles would be a great contribution to a local firehouse or EMT headquarters.
Care Packages for our Veterans
Show that you care by creating care packages with your students for a local veteran’s home. Research items that your local home may need and pair them with some beautiful cards and images.
Write to Your Local Active Military Members
Find your local hometown hero(s) or write class letters to deliver or mail to a nearby military base.
Make a Buddy Bench
Encourage your students and staff to create a “Buddy Bench.” Develop a friendly and happy place for students to go when they need a friend.
Class Food Drive
Show some local support by bringing in those cans! Collect non-perishable items and donate them to your local food bank.
Letters of Love
Make heart-felt valentines’ cards with your students and deliver them to your local nursing home.
Thank a Cafeteria Worker
Without our lunch staff, schools would not be able to operate. Have students create beautiful mini thank you images and design a bulletin board near the cafeteria entrance to share your students' gratitude and love for their hard-working cafeteria staff.
Same Desk - Future Buddy
Have your students write a letter to the future incoming students for the following year. Have them brainstorm tips and tricks, so they are successful in their next grade level and new school year. These could be used to distribute the following year to that special student assigned in their old seat.
Love starts in the HOME
Brainstorm at-home chores that your students may not be excited about completing. Laundry, vacuuming, cleaning up after their pets..etc. Have them create personalized coupon books with their chosen chores to "gift" to their family members. It is an important lesson that actions can share love and kindness in their home.
Thank You Custodians
Have your students create a decorative poster for their after-school custodians. Before the end of the day, have your students tidy up the room and complete basic room chores so the custodian will be excited and relaxed when receiving their poster.
Collect Animal Donations
Local Animal Shelters are always looking for volunteers and pet supplies. Have your class launch a week of donating dog/cat food items. Students can decorate medium-sized boxes.
Build a Pep Rally Hallway
Create large posters with kind and encouraging statements to other students. Decorate the hall with pom-poms, balloons, and all of the posters. Spread kindness by encouraging others to travel down that hallway when they need a quick pick-me-up.
Clean-up Committee
Create a class project where you visit a local school playground to pick up litter.
Local Hospital Love
Assemble simple craft kits or create original comic books for a local children’s hospital.
