Let's face it, most students have a love or hate relationship when it comes to writing. This can end up being problematic as it is a core component of their curriculum and learning journey. Many standardized assessments also dedicate a large portion to gauge writing ability and writing expression through open-ended questions or constructed response essay prompts. As the rigor and student performance expectations rise each year, writing becomes more prevalent. Young writers must develop strong skills enabling them to develop well-organized writing pieces using details from their extensive learning repertoire. Narrative writing essays are a common and essential writing prompt on many standardized assessments.

Narrative writing is an excellent way for children to develop skills and become strong storytellers. Storytelling is an essential skill students should practice regularly. Narrative writing is ultimately story writing. Students can create detailed and exciting original pieces of nonfiction or fiction narratives. They must structure their writing through a narrative lens. There are several forms of narrative writing, but today we will focus on one - descriptive narrative.

Descriptive Narrative

In a descriptive narrative, students must focus on descriptive details throughout their writing. They must focus on the story’s setting,  character traits, and minor details. Students must get specific and highlight smells, tastes, and vivid details so the reader will instantly start building a picture within their mind as the story unfolds! Students must write so that the reader can visualize and feel what is being described throughout the narrative. Graphic organizers are a great way to keep your students’ writing structured and detailed. Challenge your students to express their writing using the five senses: taste, sight, smell, sound, and touch. Readers rely on senses to have a better understanding of what descriptions the writer is creating for their audience.
