School Lunch Hero Day
Make Your School Awesome Staff
May 6, 2021
A school cafeteria is a magical place where students share stories and make memories that last a lifetime, for sure…. We all could reminisce about a favorite dish or that special delicious snack, which made our school day much better. It is now time to thank our dedicated men and women behind the scenes that allow our students to enjoy their lunches and make these wonderful school memories.
Remember to thank your amazing nutrition professionals this week! Friday, May 7, 2021, is School Lunch Hero Day! If the pandemic taught us anything, it is that our school cafeteria staff are essential, important, and irreplaceable! Covid certainly has posed several challenges in the educational community - regardless of the status of in-person or virtual learning, our students needed to remain healthy and nourished. During the course of the pandemic, many students faced hardships with local schools being forced to close. Thousands of students received instruction via virtual learning, but how do you provide food virtually? You simply cannot.
Many school districts and their devoted nutrition professionals packaged their students’ meals and transported them across towns, delivering items to families daily. As schools reopened and were challenged to serve meals in a socially distanced manner, many cafeteria staff went above and beyond providing food to classrooms and alternative food distribution locations.
Our school nutrition professionals are our heroes each year, not just during a global pandemic. They provide a friendly smile and a warm lunch to hundreds of students each day across school districts. Their job is simply not cooking and serving meals. They provide proper nutrition and follow all nutritional guidelines. They also ensure allergy plans are implemented when needed. Their job is no easy task!
The SNA “School Nutrition Association” has created a National School Lunch Hero Day. This May 7, 2021, marks the 8th celebration since they started this important holiday! If you are a school district leader, elementary principal, educator, or simply a parent, make sure you show your staff you care.
Here are some ideas:
1. Make a homemade card and write a message.
2. Create a school banner to hang at the entrance.
3. Provide them flowers and some sweets.
4. Make them a custom basket of their favorite treats and snacks.
